[CentOS] nmap showing lots of ports open that shouldn't be

So would:

# rpm -e iptables --nodeps
# rm /etc/sysconfig/iptables (just to be sure)
# yum install iptables

fix his problem? 

Of course, that would leave the question of how it was caused in the 
first place...
