If you are a control freak (like the Debian devs), then have a similar server like your database server and THEN FIRST apply any updates to that one. Then you have the chance to see if anything breaks. However doesn't your database/other apps need upgrades/bug fixes? Some bugs could lead in extreme cases to data corruption.
