Have you got a mangled entry in either /etc/passwd, shadow, group or gshadow?

It might be worth checking both installs are identical too...

machine1# rpm -qa | sort > ~/rpms.sorted.machine1

machine2# rpm -qa | sort > ~/rpms.sorted.machine2

Copy rpms.sorted from one machine to the other and then diff them.
They *should* be identical.
