In this case, assuming you have unpacked the tarball in your user space and it works for your purposes, NOT using an RPM may be better due to the tangled web of dependencies required for the eclipse RPM. The usual answer is that the package manager keeps track of what is installed, along with all dependencies, and makes it easier to install/un-install cleanly. Phil
