As you already mentioned ... in the CentOS X.Y notation:

X = major version (ie EL2, EL3, EL4)
Y = update set (ie 3.6 is EL3 update 6, 4.2 is EL4 update 2, etc.)

The beta period for EL4 started on 27 Sep 2004 and EL4 was released
upstream on 14 Feb 2005.

Just for the record, 18 months from 27 Sep 2004 is 27 Mar 2005 ... but I
expect that EL 5 will probably be based on FC5 and not FC4.  FC5 was
delayed a couple months, so I would expect RHEL5 to be the same.  If
that is the case, expect an EL 5 beta to be released within a month of
the release of FC5.

The current expected FC5 release date is 15 Mar 2006.

All that said, EL5 Beta 1 could be released as soon as 15 Mar 2006 ...
it could also be delayed.
