As is explained at length in several places, RH/CentOS is an enterprise 
distro and doesn't change kernel versions within a major release.  That 
being said, drivers are among the things updated in that base kernel.  I'm 
happily running CentOS 4.4 on a Dell Precision 390 (C2D w/ the 975 
chipset).
