You are wrong. You have plenty of other things running as well, including
Gnome, which is a heavy beast.

If you are planning on playing DVDs and other such stuff on your
laptop, I suggest replacing Gnome for some more lightweight window manager.
My personal recomendation is IceWM, but there are plenty of others.
Gnome and KDE are not recomended (by me) on anything with less than
512MB RAM.
