Sorry if I'm stating the obvious, but you do need to reboot after adding
the line to /etc/modprobe.conf.  Memory is hazy as I have not done this
for quite a while, but I believe you also need to add the adapter in
system-config-network with "New" on the "Devices" tab.  It does have to
show up on the "Hardware" tab for this to work.

Assuming you get that far, it is good to create separate profiles to use
when you move from wired to wireless.  These can be selected at boot
time by adding "netprofile="MyProfileName" (in my case MyProfileName can
be "Wired", "WiFi", or a few other location-dependent values) to the
kernel line in /boot/grub/grub.conf - otherwise defaults to the last
used profile.  Can either manually edit at boot time (requires you to
remember the legal profile names) or maintain separate grub stanzas for
different profiles.
