the onboard 'raid' is fake raid, implemented in the BIOS and Windows 
device drivers. horrid nasty stuff. the actual hardware is simply SATA 
channels. Linux's own raid is MUCH smarter about things and more 
predictable, also higher performance as it has a much better idea of 
whats going on than the device driver layer could.
