I think /etc/sysconfig/kernel  holds the answer to curing the problem 
"permanently".
Mine sez:
$ cat /etc/sysconfig/kernel
# UPDATEDEFAULT specifies if new-kernel-pkg should make
# new kernels the default
UPDATEDEFAULT=yes

# DEFAULTKERNEL specifies the default kernel package type
DEFAULTKERNEL=kernel
$
