speaking of said 2.6.9-42.0.8.EL kernels... updated my vmware guest 
centos's tonite (32bit guests on a 64bit RHEL4 host), and blam, they 
lost access to the vmware network adatper, eth0 didn't show up at all on 
them.  rolled back them to 42.0.3 and eth0 reappeared.

grrrrrr.
