Sounds like a video problem.

What kind of video card is in that server?

If it is ATI or NVIDIA, try that in the startup.

linux nvidia

or

linux ati

You could also try it in CLI mode (no X server at all) if you are OK
with it that way. CLI only mode is like this:

linux 3 nox
