[CentOS] Starting MySQL

When I submit

# /sbin/service mysqld start

I get the message: mysqld unrecognized service

When I type in

# yum install mysql

I am told it is already installed.  Also, the GUI for services does not 
have mysql listed.  How I can tell if mysql is truly installed?
