This is the error checking in Nahant. Those are line numbers.

      31 # Fallbacks, in order
      32 exec gdm $* >/dev/null 2>&1
      33 exec kdm $* >/dev/null 2>&1
      34 exec xdm $* >/dev/null 2>&1

If none of those takes, you aren't going to get a GUI login.
