Okay, there are 3820 lines in there, so I'll try to post what looks interesting:

(==) ServerLayout "single head configuration"
(**) |-->Screen "Screen0" (0)
(**) |   |-->Monitor "<default monitor>"
(**) |   |-->Device "Videocard0"
(WW) No monitor specified for screen "Screen0".
    Using a default monitor configuration.
(**) |-->Input Device "Keyboard0"
(==) |-->Input Device "<default pointer>"
(WW) The core pointer device wasn't specified explicitly in the layout.
    Using the default mouse configuration.
(WW) No FontPath specified. Using compiled-in default.
(==) FontPath set to:
    unix/:7100,
    built-ins

The only strange part here is that this is how system-config-display
left it - practically nothing inside the xorg.conf file (as previously
posted). Should there be more, and if so, why didn't s-c-d put it
there?

(--) PCI:*(1:0:0) ATI Technologies Inc unknown chipset (0x71d2) rev 0,

(--) PCI: (1:0:1) ATI Technologies Inc unknown chipset (0x71f2) rev 0,

This is how the FireGL 3400 shows up.

(II) VESA: driver for VESA chipsets: vesa
(II) Primary Device is: PCI 01:00:0
(--) Assigning device section with no busID to primary device
(--) Chipset vesa found

I guess this fits with the above, but that is all strange.

Of course, Xorg.0.log.old has this:

Fatal server error:
xf86OpenConsole: VT_WAITACTIVE failed: Interrupted system call

I'm not sure what that means - this was just a plain vanilla reboot
from the menu reboot icon....

Thanks.
