The screen went black (no input, complete with the short "no video signal" message from the screen) until I reset the gdm. Then it recognized and used the DVI for output. It works fine, but I'm not so sure about having both cables connected at the same time. NVidia's tech person said that I should only use one cable per monitor, although having both connected won't hurt anything. There is a setting that can be used in xorg.conf to tell X what order to use in scanning for a monitor, but I figured it's just easier to have one cable plugged in. The difference in the video itself (DVI vs. VGA) is quite startling - visibly cleaner and crisper. Thanks everyone! mhr
