hi mark..

my bad for not providing additional information on the linksys usb port.

the toshiba satellite has an internal atheros, although i forget what the
chipset is. but i couldn't get it running natively under FC 8. Couldn't get
it to run using madwifi either as i wanted to go x86_64. So i finally punted
and went to best buy, picked up a bunch of usb wifi devices and plugged them
in. Got lucky in that the linksys device was recognized by the
kernel/system...

My lsusb is:
 Linksys WUSB54GC 882.11g Adapter [ralink rt73]

hope this helps..

peace

ps, the device cost ~ $45.00

Interesting that you omit the model number. Is it the
Linksys WUSB54GSC, or something close to that?

Although atheros chipsets will work with the madwifi
drivers, USB devices were not supported as late as Feb
'08. See
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=4269087

Most likely your toshiba makes a wifi connection via
the internal atheros device (which works with
madwifi).

I would like to see the relevant lsusb, lspci, and
modprobe.conf (alias) lines that expose how madwifi
supports your USB device.
