The differences between 4.4 and 4.8 should keep the same base versions of applications and libraries, so they should not "break" anything that is currently working on your machine right now (but if the system is critical you might decide to test the upgrade in a test environment first.) On the other hand, if you are still running software from 4.4, there are know bugs and exploits to which your machine is vulnerable, and it is in more risk of being attacked than if it were fully updated.
