Good documentation for this lives in the following directory:

/usr/share/doc/initscripts-<VERSION>/sysconfig.txt

The <VERSION> should be replaced with the version string of the initscripts 
rpm found by running 'rpm -q initscripts --format %{VERSION} && echo' at the 
terminal.
