We tried Sequioa:
http://www.continuent.com/community/lab-projects/sequoia

We wanted automatic failover and geographical
distribution
of the database nodes.  Sequoia only supports
master-master
operation if the database nodes are on the same
subnet.

We did not find anything else out there, so we wrote
our
own geographically distributed database system.
We can adapt that to your project if you are
interested.

Your e-commerce site can be geographically redundant
and available
even if failure occurs. Ask me about the GRed database
system.

  suitable fro webpages and so on. What do we need to make it as a LAMP cluster,
  i.e with a mysql HA backend as well.

So-> HA of [ LoadBalancer +
  Apache + MySQL}

  CentOS has the redhat piranha packages available for
    install.  Piranha
is a repackaging of the linux virtual server
    software, along with a
web-based front-end.  You can find
    information about that in the
CentOS docs and also by googling for
    "redhat piranha".
