Connextant is one company that makes quite a lot of the chipsets used over the last 4 - 5 years, but they have many s/w modem too - so make sure you buy into the right thing. btw, most pcmcia modems work fine - and its not hard getting a pci hosted pcmcia socket on ebay these days.
