looks like Lustre has very specific kernel requirements, see
http://wiki.lustre.org/index.php/Lustre_Support_Matrix

eg, Lustre 1.8.0 -must- be run with kernel 2.6.18-92.1.17.el5 and not, 
for example, 2.6.18-92.1.18.el5
