[CentOS] no snd-hda-codec.ko in CentOS 5.3 is that ok ?

did you try see the permission on:
ls -l /dev/dsp
ls -l /dev/audio
and ls -l /dev/snd/
?

alsamixer what say?

lsmod provides the correct module of your soundcard?
