[CentOS] Persistent desktop icons ?

Ok, I use KDE at work and by putting .desktop items in /usr/share/apps/ 
kdesktop/Desktop the icons are global to all desktops and can't be  
removed.

How you do it in gnome, I haven't a clue, but it works in KDE.
