I'm trying to resurrect this seemingly dead thread... :-)

A CentOS forum user (gulikoza) has a patch, tested it with the 
2.6.18-164.2.1 kernel, and offered it in this post:

I am going to give it a try and see if I can include it in the next 
centosplus kernel update.
