I think it would be wise to read some basic *nix documentation. 
Something like :

* Linux Cookbook (Carla Schroder)
* Definitive Guide to CentOS
* Foundations of CentOS
* Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 Administration

It's not much use trying to fly a plane by pushing all the buttons and 
see what they do. This advice is meant in a friendly way.
