May be unzipped data was over 8G?

Its low memory problem.
Anyway you can try,
   A. Add swapfile(swapon /dev/swap
     # (8G+SWAP) > (Unzipped5G.tgz+tar+gzip+file cache.+etc.),
   B. Buy more memory(go to radioshack).
