We have this issue too. Our case it caused by a faulty ethernet card. If a user logs on with a large profile 2-8GB it will lock the card up, then samba will not start (no messages, just the [OK] and it is gone). When we powercycle the box, all is well. We have tried to rmmod/insmod the nic drivers with intermittent results. We have the new boxes to migrate, now just looking for the time to do it.
