The attackers are not trying constantly.. Just a few bursts of trys.

Look at denyhosts ( http://denyhosts.sourceforge.net/ ). 
I also have a tool for protecting from brute force attacks called Hawk ( 
https://github.com/hackman/Hawk-IDS-IPS ).
