sadly, gmail/googlemail is very hostile to proper quoting practices.     
it hides quoted text, while leaving the whole previous message appended, 
without any form of > quoting.   The only workable way around this is to 
use a imap/pop client like Thunderbird with it, which then disables a 
lot of the web functionality of gmail... meanwhile, yahoomail still 
can't seem to get the concept of 'references' right, so every message 
reply via yahoo breaks teh thread quoting on systems that rely on 
References headers to maintain the proper threading.    cellphone email 
is just awful, promoting one line top posted messages.   Sadly, its a 
lost battle.     these people are better off on facebook.
