Oh, well, we decided yesterday afternoon that we had some idea of what was on it, given the volume name (basically, nothing worth saving), and my manager felt we were spending way too much time on this, and so I shredded the disks. Thanks for everyone's thoughts and help - it was a truly annoying pain, though I did learn a good bit from folks' suggestions about recovering RAID and lvm. mark
