Thanks for all the replies concerning this.

I have bought an off-the-shelf 24" round ATA 133 IDE cable, 
and installed that in place of the 40-wire cable.

The problem now appears to be fixed. Been keeping an eye on 
my logwatch emails, and they are no longer reporting this 
problem.
