just a stab in the dark here -- upstream issued an update to 
poppler / evince that obsoleted xpdf (gratuitiously) mid 
ABI lifecycle in 5, seemingly for a security matter that 
seemed, to me to be a mild local exposure, only

$ ldd /usr/bin/gimp | grep pop
$

perhaps a needed helper application is now absent?
