If needed on a bare bones install, I setup my partitions 
first with Gparted, either the GParted Live CD, or the 
version included with PartitionMagic on the UBCD CD.

But you still need to access the Create Custom Partition 
Layout to make use of the partitions you have prepared ready 
for use. I generally only mount the root partition, SWAP and 
/tmp. Anything else gets mounted by my ALI scripts later on 
after the minimal Linux installation is up and running.
