Or do the processing locally and stay away from proc nuttiness,
without mucking with ssh and awk.
grep ^processor /proc/cpuinfo | wc -l
Or:
ssh -l $TARGETUSER $TARGETHOST "[ -e /proc/cpuinfo ] -a grep
^processor | wc -l"
