A tad late but you can try running "smartctl -H /dev/sdX" or "smartctl -a /dev/sdX" where /dev/sdX is your boot disk. Chances are that it will only tell you what you already know: the drive is dying. I've had good luck with smartd telling me when a disk is starting to fail. Partition tables don't just disappear on healthy hard drives. Cheers, Dave
