Joining the list is a great start.  Also, reading some of the FAQ would be a good idea.
In case you're not familiar with what CentOS really is, maybe check this:

As others have mentioned, a VM would be good.  I personally prefer VirtualBox since it seems to perform very well without taxing the host too much.
