Finally found it - the gnome-volume-control app actually spawns the 
Preferences>Sound dialog and under the Applications tab the various 
running sound apps are shown. The firefox/flash plugin shows as ALSA 
plug-in [npviewer.bin] and was muted - simply unmute and all is well.
