If you can't even boot into single user mode you have major problems, which you'd probably need to diagnose with a rescue CD (the CentOS installer DVD doubles as rescue media). If you can at least get somewhere with runlevel 1 (or S), and with leaving out rhgb and quiet from the kernel parameters, you might see an interesting message on the console that would point in the right direction. The reason I suggest these steps is that "system halts" is not a very helpful problem description. The more specific information you can provide the more likely you are to get useful advice.
