I'd go so far as to say you should ALWAYS use the service (or /etc/rc.d/init.d/$SERVICENAME) commands to do start/stop/reload/etc... the service script might be setting up environment variables, and/or running the commands with a specific set of parameters, which you might miss starting it manually -- john r pierce 37N 122W somewhere on the middle of the left coast
