For the sake of the archives, this is now fixed (since today), the bug is closed upstream and the EPEL6 stable repo is now showing a fixed hdf5-1.8.5.patch1-9.el6 package, allowing me to upgrade to CentOS 6.6 (even if http://dl.fedoraproject.org/pub/epel/6/x86_64/repoview/ doesn't show the package update yet).
