after giving a lot of thought to problem, there are ?easy? ways
of locating problem. maybe.

i am using firefox and thunderbird 24.8.0 [waiting for mozilla to
clean up all the bugs with 'latest and greatest'], so i am not aware
of what all files are in profile directory, other than as mentioned
below.

i would think that if there are problems with any type of history file,
as suggested, it would be easier just to rename 'history file' to
'history file'.old, then reopen firefox and let it rebuild history
file. _except_ for bookmarks file "places.sqlite".

"places.sqlite" when backed up as a bookmarks-*.json file, i do not
believe, backup "history folders". imbw.

if correct, backing up bookmarks, then restoring from *.json would
restore bookmarks without history folders.

tho it would be easier/quicker to just delete folders under "History"
in "Library" window.

problems with firefox may be easy to locate by using logging of
"Browser Console", which is opened with <ctrl+shift+j>. after opening,
click on [Clear], then close "Browser Console", then firefox.

next, try opening a hot link, after firefox crashes, open firefox
manually, open "Browser Console", read what is shown to see what
may be causing problem. also see hot link #5 bellow.

following are a few of bookmarks that i have related to your problem,
_if_ problem is related to "places.sqlite", as suggested.

1a- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Category:History
1b- http://kb.mozillazine.org/History.dat
2- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Places.sqlite
3a- https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Tech/Places/
3b-
  https://developer.mozilla.org/en-US/docs/Mozilla/Tech/Places/Database
4- kb.mozillazine.org/Firefox_crashes
5- http://kb.mozillazine.org/Breakpad

again, after you get this problem solved, i will post easy way of
archiving mozilla progs.

hth.
