The / means start from the root directory so where you are when you run it is irrelevant. howevver if he doesn't run it as the root user, it won't be able to calculate space in directories the current user can't access. if you are running X-Windows, there's a nifty utility KDirStat that scans the disk tallying space, then gives you an interactive graphical view of usage.
