thru many years, i have always tried to maintain perseverance with what
ever task i i met with, but this time i admit i failed.

after many hours and attempts to get system working with yum, i decided
to 'kick the bull in the balls' and reinstalled centos.

one thing i decided to do was find out why 6.8 dvd would not boot. turned
out it was the graphics card, presumable needed drivers were not on
6.8 dvd.

change of graphics card allowed 6.8 dvd, install went without problem and
tower box is now working.

as of yet, i have not run update due to problem that hit laptop when i ran
6.8 update.

posting problem w/subject;

  users unable to log into kde after 6.8 upgrade

thanks again to jtj and Eero for replies.
