Folks

I'm having problems installing Mariadb in Centos 7.

Here's what I did:

0) Become root
1) Make sure that mariadb and mysql are NOT installed.
2) Delete residual libs
          rm -rf /var/lib/mysq*
3) yum install -y mariadb-server
     installed mariadb-5.5.50-1.el7_2.x86_64 from the Centos
'updates' repository
4) systemctl start mariadb
5) systemctl status mariadb

All works well until step 5, where I get the result:

# systemctl status mariadb
? mariadb.service - MariaDB database server
    Loaded: loaded (/usr/lib/systemd/system/mariadb.service; enabled;
vendor preset: disabled)
Active: failed (Result: exit-code) since Thu 2016-09-22 17:46:38

[root at goat ~]#

My environment is a Centos 7 installation running as a VM inside
Vmware, and is not a production system. It is updated nightly.

When I examined the files alluded to,

   /var/log/mysqld.log
  does not exist
but
   /var/log/mariadb/mariadb.log
  exists and is empty.

Adivce would be appreciated

Thanks

David
