You need to look at the likes of gpsbabel (http://www.gpsbabel.org/), and websites like poi-factory (http://www.poi-factory.com/) to chase this sort of problem. I've found very few openly Linux solutions but I've also gotten to the point that "viewing" the files is less needed than before. I do a lot of shell based work.
