I would disagree. Postfix and Dovecot are both very well documented. Running the server yourself protects your users from content scanning by the companies that profit from tracking users. And running itself lets you run DANE for SMTP which makes MITM a lot more difficult when the other server you are talking to supports DANE for SMTP. The major e-mail services do not offer that. Sure it is more work, but it isn't that difficult to get it right.
