I am using BackupPC too, but you don't need to rsync the data first.
BackupPC can rsync data natively.
I am using independent backup servers that are not accessible from the
backup sources.
Don't forget safety and integrity of your backed up data these days!

Btw., it is not only a nice backup software, it is also very nice in
recovering data through its web interface.
