After some more research, I think I found the definitive answer to the problem.
It's a little bit more complicated.

UEFI -> GPT

BIOS -> MBR

BIOS with disk > 2^32 sectores (2 TiB) -> GPT

And searching for this, I stumbled over docs.centos.org, whose existence I
ignored. Must be relatively new:
