VMWare - 5.2 Update - Kernel Best Practices

Thanks for all the great stuff. Executive Summary: Kernel Parameters or Special Kernel for 5.2 on VMWare? More Details: Is it the best practice to use the specially compiled kernels (when available, typically here: http://people.centos.org/~tru/kernel-vm/5/RPMS/i386/ ) or are kernel parameters now able to achieve the same thing? This bug report: http://bugs.centos.org/view.php?id=2189 seems to suggest clocksource=pit and divider=10 will crash kernels and I did not see "it's fixed" in the release notes. gnome desktop XDMCP in domU

Hello, i have CentOS on xen as domU, i have installed "yum groupinstall Gnome Desktop ... " . I want to access Gnome Desktoup through XDMCP protocol, but unfortunately X server will not start when there is no graphical output where to start. How can i solve this problem? And of course i have edited gdm.conf and added to [XDMCP] Enable = True. Thanks in advance! David

unable to access xen guest's console

Hello all, I am new to Xen; I followed a few techtips/technotes from How2forge and other linux sites to walk me through configuring the following: - proper installation of xen kernel on a CentOS 5.1 server - booting into the xen kernel and checking the Dom0 (all is fine): [root@dataserv3 /]# xm list Name ID Mem(MiB) VCPUs State Time(s) Domain-0 0 1737 2 r----- 1155.0 - Next instructions that attempt to walk me through installing my first guest OS via "virt-install" and/or "virtual manager" - both allowed me to get to the point of where the guest DomU is created ... and it's at 12%; the CLI install process tells me to access the console - but I am unable to console into the new guest DomU. xm list now shows: -------------------- xm list Name ID Mem(MiB) VCPUs State Time(s) Domain-0 0 1737 2 r----- 1155.0 centos50 2 255 1 ------ 0.0 xm console centos50 gives me an error: xm console centos50 xenconsole: Could not read tty from store: No such file or directory While running the Virtual Machine Mgr GUI - when I click on my guest DomU - its console window appears gray with a message "The console is currently unavailable". Questions: 1. Is there a link or some paper that I may have missed that outlines potential issues in configuring Xen guest machines using virt-install and/or Virtual Machine Mgr? 2. Add new drive to Windows domu

Hi everyone, I'm wondering how one adds a new drive to a Windows domu... I'm running Centos 5.1 x86_64 on a Xeon server and have a Windows 2003 R2 64 bit domu. The Windows system was installed from a CD onto this server so it is a brand new VM. All working fine. So then I wish to add another drive to the Windows domu for a data drive. I added the drive to the Xen configuration, but it doesn't turn up in Windows. When I reboot and go into the Windows server control panel/system/hardware, there is still only one drive there, a QEMU drive. Here is the configuration I have... Virtuozzo & GFS

I have just finished deploying two Dell PowerEdge 1950s with CentOS 5.1 and Virtuozzo 4. GFS is up and running and Virtuozzo is configured for shared-storage clustering. Everything works adequately but I am wondering if anyone else has experienced load issues like I am seeing. I have three VEs/VMs running, two on one node and one on the other node. One of the VEs on each node are doing very little (one is just idling with apache and mysql and the other is running rsync every six hours). The other is running Zimbra. Every so often load will spike on the node running the Zimbra VE to as high as 2 or 3 then settle down a short while later to around 0.8 or 0.9. During the spikes the node not running Zimbra will other see an increase from its idle load of 0.4 or so up to as high as 1.7 as I have seen. I notice when running top that dlm_send and dlm_recv will jump to the top fairly frequently when these load spikes occur. What I am wondering is whether anyone else has experienced these kind of load scenarios with GFS and what they have done to deal with them? We are hoping to deploy a bit more densely on this setup so I'd like to make any performance adjustments I can at this stage. Thanks, James Thompson
